Travel with the driver of a miniature Pacific at scale speeds of up to 75mph! Cab and lineside footage are blended to give a remarkable insight into this unique railway.
The Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway is the biggest and best train set in the world. The one-third size locos run to and fro on regular train service at speeds of 25 mph, a scale 75 mph! In this video you travel with the driver of miniature Pactific, No.3 Southern Maid, designed Greenly and built by Paxmans in 1926. You see and feel the locomotive working at full power, up to its top speed. There are remarkable scenes in parallel showing the engine steaming fast along the tracks to Hythe, with rails clicking beneath her. There are shots from the lineside that mix with those in the cab and you see it as it is, with with all the rough and tumble of a cab ride along with this remarkable line: coal goes on the fire, smoke and steam stream from the chimney, the whistle blows water into the camera. It's an exciting two-hour trip on the best train set in the world.
There's also a second programme where the controls of 4-8-2 locomotive Hercules are explained. This is a privileged look at life in the cab of the Romney Hythe and Dymchurch Railway locomotives.
Running time - approx 120 minutes.
